THE ‘MAGIC JUMPING BEAN’ UPDATE JULY 2018

Lister House Sculpture Progress Report by Tim Shutter Artist/Sculptor           July 2018

World Emoji Day

When sitting down to write this update Google informed me that today the 17th of July is the celebration of the fifth world Emoji day, so It is very appropriate that I have just finished carving another fifty!  I learnt that the modern Emoji was first devised for phones in 1999, the name in Japanese meaning ‘picture character’ and that there are now 1644 Emojis on the official Unicode list.

THE ‘MAGIC JUMPING BEAN’ UPDATE APRIL 2018

Lister House Sculpture Progress Report by Tim Shutter Artist/Sculptor           April 2018

The Start of Phase Two

With the coming of spring I am starting the next phase of the sculpture.  All the roughing out has been completed and the detailed carving begins. Using smaller hand tools rather than power tools I am now no longer peering through a haze of stone dust, which makes a pleasant change. Working from the small clay maquettes developed for the initial design, this stage involves the carving of fifty ‘happy spheres’ though the change of material and scale means I need to keep making small changes to their designs.

April’s Happy Heads

So far I have finished one of the slabs with ten heads. I had a visit from a four year old whom I am glad to say liked the heads, especially the smiling star, but when she came back with her father half an hour later she wanted to see what new heads I had carved! At my present rate each head takes two or three days to complete, which means that I will have to keep up a steady rate of work to complete all the heads by the August deadline.

THE ‘MAGIC JUMPING BEAN’ UPDATE MAR 2018

Testing Times

The big chill made working in my unheated studio quite a challenge. The adjacent Grand Union canal froze over, so it was not unexpected when the studio water pipes froze, so no coffee breaks or working toilet!  Even three pairs of socks and thermal insoles did not keep my feet warm! Railtrack also picked this month to ask for a 140% increase in rent, and presented the real prospect of having a month to find a new studio, fortunately they eventually agreed to a smaller increase, so I should be able to finish the sculpture here

Onwards and Upwards

The remaining stones that were cut last month were delivered to my studio on the 5th of February, unfortunately on close inspection the top turned stone was found to have two hairline cracks and will need to be cut again.

The ‘Magic Jumping Bean’ Update Dec 2017

Lister House Sculpture Progress Report by Tim Shutter Artist/Sculptor            Dec 2017

The Idea

The sculpture is a fun sized capsule balanced on its end, like a child’s magic jumping bean caught in the moment of equilibrium before its next somersault. Within the body of the pill like capsule, there is a massed community of happy spheres; these include simple smiling faces and spheres that have pleasing decorative forms or associations. The Sculpture is a monument to the quality of human frivolity, qualities that makes people happy, positive and healthy. This seems an entirely appropriate subject for the new Lister House Health Centre.
